Corrugated pencil rod is a great choice for supporting vines, maintaining straight trunks, promoting healthy vines and simplifying canopy management. Straight trunks reduce the threat of crown gall and minimize winter damage. Corrugated pencil rods are heat treated low-carbon 2-life coated steel rods designed for use as vineyard training stakes. The deformed surface helps vines to grab onto the stake. As a result of the heat treatment, corrugated pencil rods are suitable for triggering in-row machinery such as cultivators. The 2-life coating ensures a long lifespan, at least twice as long as heavily galvanized rod.
Vine support stakes should be left in place for as long as possible and should be securely fastened to a trellis wire to maintain an upright, vertical structure.
